I admit I poached this video from Amy Steins photography blog a few weeks earlier but I was so taken by the message about photography in it that I had to re-post it. I was thinking that in a new Canon Powershot or whatever camera commercial today we see young 20 somethings taking pictures at clubs or of friends doing normal now things. The image taking is casual, spontaneous and generally just a thoughtless extension of being in the moment.
But in the Polaroid commercial we see people taking thoughtful inquisitive shots. Using the camera for artistic outlet. Artistic even by casual users. Pictures of friends and family seem to be thoughtful composed and crafted. I think it illustrates just how omnipotent and indifferent photography and image making has become in our culture. Picture making is so ingrained of a practice that maybe the intrigue and awe has faded. Everyone does it now as standard practice of being out and living life so much so that photography has become diluted. Maybe, just a thought.
I also love the nomenclature and the technology and science lesson provided to describe how the camera works. Can you imagine a commercial now that describes in intricate detail of how the sensor on a digital camera collects the light and transforms it into data. Puh-lease, that would be nerdy and smart…nobody wants that. So enjoy and maybe even learn something….
